Are Hair Dyes & Straightening Products Safe?
Are Hair Dyes & Straightening Products Safe? For years, women have done so much to change their hair texture, hair color and length with chemicals. As women we have tried almost everything we could to use this as a form of expression. But it looks like it may be to our own detriment. This fact has now been brought to the forefront. As we travel, we hear many concerns about female issues. We hear of so many women struggling with Breast cancer as well as Fibroid. Somehow we as humans have been taught to believe that the things we put on our skin and in our mouths don’t effect our health. Shame on us.
“Many hair products contain endocrine disrupting compounds and carcinogens potentially relevant to breast cancer. Products used predominantly by black women may contain more hormonally active compounds”the study author stated. 4000 women participated in the Women of Health Circle Study. The studies were done and in non-black women there was a 9% increase with those using permanent hair die and a whopping 45% increase in African American women. Why is there such an increase for women of color? Simply put, because many mothers usely start the process of using chemicals on girls hair when they are younger. It is no wonder that the amount of black women with breast cancer and estrogen related issues is much higher than an other race. Those that used hair straightening chemicals increased their risk of breast cancer by 30%.
Over 220,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. And out of the many that are diagnosed, over 20,000 die each year. About 2,000 men are also diagnosed. Lets look at some of the determining factors as to why this is. We have already discussed Chemical Relaxers and hair dyes. Let’s also look at increased estrogen in the body. How do we get increased amounts of estrogen in the body? Remember earlier we talked about endrocrine disruptors and how these products have hundreds to thousands of these chemicals in them? The chemicals that we take in when we use these products are assimilated in the body and processed as estrogen. The body then receives it and takes it where? Where do our bodies use estrogen? Yes the reproductive organs. When a woman’s body has an abundance of estrogen, that’s when problems occur.
We can also receive endocrine disruptors from beauty products like lotions, creams, makeups, BPA bottles or containers we purchase things in, like shampoos, conditioners and even water and juice. We get excess amounts of estrogenic harmones from certain foods as well, like ALL animal based products. Yes that’s including milk. It doesnt help that many of the animal based products that we eat today have been pumped with even more hormones, so that they will grow faster and larger, to get to the market. Large amounts of phyto-estrogen are available when we consume soy in our diet as well.
I know this is a lot to take in but, the more information we know, the more we can educate ourselves on better and healthier options that are available. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Nature tells us that disease never comes without a cause. So simply put, once we understand the cause, God will give the cure!
